Carbon Footprint and Reporting

As the nation’s largest privately owned freight carrier, we take our environmental responsibility seriously. That means at Estes we’re not just tracking emissions—we’re transforming how we operate. From solar-powered terminals and electric trucks to smart route optimization and industry-leading emissions reporting tools, we’re taking bold, measurable steps to lower our carbon footprint.

And with a clear goal of reaching net-zero emissions by 2050, we’re proud of our commitment to helping build a more efficient, sustainable supply chain—one mile at a time.

Check out our Sustainability Roadmap to see the steps we are taking to reach decarbonization.

In 2023, Estes partnered with Watershed to calculate our first-ever carbon footprint for Scopes 1 and 2 Greenhouse Gas Emissions, capturing both direct and indirect emissions from our operations. This foundational step allows us to make more informed, strategic decisions as we work toward net-zero.

Through this data-driven approach, we’re able to:

  • Analyze our emissions data with greater precision
  • Identify emissions hot spots across our operations
  • Set smarter, data-supported reduction targets
  • Track progress and adjust strategies over time
  • Better manage our environmental impact at every level

Explore the full footprint and what it means for our sustainability journey in our 2024 Sustainability Report.

Estes is proud to partner with forward-thinking organizations to advance freight sustainability on a global scale. As a member of the Smart Freight Centre, we’re strengthening our approach to carbon reduction by collaborating across the industry and refining how emissions are measured and allocated—critical steps toward reaching our decarbonization goals.

We also joined forces with SMC³ and fellow LTL carriers to launch the first phase of a standardized allocated emissions calculator in January 2025. Built on EPA SmartWay and Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) frameworks, this pilot program will give customers actionable insights into the carbon impact of their freight, helping to empower smarter, more sustainable shipping decisions.

Estes is making strategic investments and operational improvements to lower our carbon emissions through:

  • Route Optimization: Our advanced route optimization tools help streamline delivery schedules, reduce total mileage, and boost load efficiency—cutting down on fuel use
  • Engine Performance: We maintain a high-performing fleet through top-tier equipment and proactive maintenance, helping reduce fuel consumption and carbon output while maximizing efficiency
  • Driver Efficiency: Our tractors are equipped with Samsara technology to monitor driver behavior and encourage fuel-smart habits. The most efficient drivers can achieve up to 30% better fuel economy than the least efficient drivers
  • Training: We provide our drivers with hands-on training in sustainability-focused techniques like proper tire inflation, optimal shifting, speed control, and reduced idling—turning everyday habits into long-term environmental gains
